There is an obvious double standard when comparing the criticism George W Bush took to that of Obama is receiving. In addition to President Obama's countless speaking blunders in such a short period of time as President, there are the below actions that raises the question...What If Bush Had Done That?
Speaking blunders: see "Speaking Skills" page
Goldman Sachs Scandal: Goldman Sachs was President Obama’s top Wall Street contributor during the 2008 election cycle, donating nearly $1 million to his campaign. The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the Goldman Sachs investment firm. They are accused of manipulating markets and swindling customers by selling securities it knew to be of dubious value. Imagine if it was George W Bush who's top Wall Street contributor was Goldman Sachs?
2010 BP Oil Spill: The Obama administration waited ten days before getting involved with the oil spill that took place in the Gulf Of Mexico. This indicated Obama gave full confidence in BP that it would resolve the oil leak. Ironically, the top recipient of BP-related donations during the 2008 cycle was President Barack Obama himself, who collected $71,000. Imagine if it was George W Bush who had been the top recipient of an oil company's donations before failing to act accordingly with such a devastating event.
In addition, President Obama spent one night telling jokes at the the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. during the worst environmental disaster in recorded history. What if George W Bush had done that?
Offshore drilling: President Obama ended the 20-year ban on new oil and natural gas offshore drilling along much of the U.S. Atlantic coast and northern Alaska. George W Bush who made a symbolic move to end the 20 year ban in 2008, was accused by many of making his decisions based on "profits he made from oil". So it is quite ironic that Obama was the one who ended the 20 year ban.
New Orleans: George W Bush caught a lot of heat during the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans, LA. Obviously unfair and unreasonable to entirely blame Bush considering it was the LA. local and state government, as well as the behavior of many New Orleans citizens, that contributed poorly and failed to act accordingly during such an event. But it seems that Obama has gotten a pass on New Orleans. The Obama administration has not delivered on promises to restore the coast. In fact, no major coastal restoration initiatives have been launched by Obama in the first ten months of his presidency. Obama took 10 months before making his first trip to New Orleans on Oct 15 and that was only a four-hour stop on his way to a Democratic $3 million fundraiser. Ironically Obama had rallied against the Bush administration for abandoning and then neglecting the people of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
Fundraisers: Just nine months into his presidency, President Obama has appeared at 23 Democratic fundraisers, compared with George W. Bush, who did 6 political fundraisers, during his first year in office. It should be noted that Bush raised $48 million in those six fundraisers, while Obama raised $21 million in his first 20.
Afghanistan: Some have even gone so far as to call George W Bush a "murderer" even though he was simply protecting America from the terrorists who killed nearly 3,000 lives on Sept 11, 2001. However, it is President Obama that has continued the aggressive approach. First in February of 2009, President Obama sent an additional 17,000 US troops to Afghanistan. He has also ordered several times the use of drone bombings. In fact Obama has ordered more drone attacks (when combining Pakistan and Afghanistan drone attacks) in 10 months than George W. Bush did during his entire 8 years (two terms). These attacks have left many Pakistan and Afghan civilians injured or killed. Unfortunately the killing of innocent civilian is, always was, and always will be part of any war.
Playing Golf: It only took Obama a little over one year for this accomplishment. According to CBS' Mark Knoller — an unofficial documentarian and statistician of the White House, President Barack Obama has played golf 32 times since he took office, eight more than his predecessor George W. Bush did in his entire presidency. George W Bush was shown in the Michael Moore film Fahrenheit 9/11 condemning "terrorist killers" in the Middle East when asked a question on the golf course in 2002. Barely pausing for breath, he added: "Thank you. Now watch this drive." George W Bush later gave up golf, saying in a 2008 interview: "I don't want to have some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf... And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.".......will Obama do the same?
Snubbing the Dalai Lama:. For the first time in 18 years, the Dalai Lama did not meet the U.S. president. Tibet’s exiled religious leader — was ignored by President Obama in favor of communist China. In nearly nine months in office, President Obama has found time to meet with Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega and Vladimir Putin. But he brushed aside the Dalai Lama, a peaceful religious leader who has long been a friend to the U.S. and an advocate of human rights for China's six million Tibetans.
Freezing out a TV network (Fox news): It is a well known fact that the majority of the American media (which is overhwhelmingly liberal) covers Obama in a positive way. Fox news on the other hand, is one of the few news outlets that does not give Obama a free pass. Instead most of Fox News top commentators challenge Obama's decisions. In contrast, for 8 years George W. Bush was heavily criticized from most of the media, especially the left wing cable news network of MSNBC. Bush never challenged their right to free speech like Obama has done towards Fox News. Obama's White House even announced it had deemed Fox to be not a “legitimate news organization.” A bad move on their part considering FOX News is consistently doubling the ratings of other cable news networks. When making his case against Fox News, President Obama failed to point out the fact that almost 50% of the Fox News audience is Democrat or Independent.
